6/27/2023 0 Comments Brave new world revisited 1958He was a far more serious man in 1958 - at the age of 64 - and the world was a very different place, transformed by the catastrophe of World War II, the advent of nuclear weapons and the grip of the Cold War. Taking a second look at specific aspects of the future Huxley imagined in Brave New World, Huxley meditated on how his fantasy seemed to be turning into reality, frighteningly and much more quickly than he had ever dreamed. That he had been so prophetic in 1931 about the dystopian future gave Huxley no comfort. Instead, he revisited that world in a set of 12 essays. In 1958, Aldous Huxley wrote what might be called a sequel to his novel Brave New World, published in 1932, but it was a sequel that did not revisit the story or the characters, or re-enter the world of the novel.

Brief Summary of Book: Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up by Naya Rivera 6/26/2023 0 Comments Empire of storms book orderSome will say I dragged my heels when stretching the training out over three books. One of the characters is (a bit like one of mine) a sword-wielding martial arts expert trained by a holy order. The characters also have their own slang which, while realistic and adding local colour, also tends to irritate me whenever I encounter it in a book. I guess there are shades of Priest of Bones and Low Town to be seen. It's urban fantasy in as much as most of it happens within a city, specifically the slums of a city. But for all that it's probably a lot closer to traditional heroic fantasy than it is to grimdark. One of the main characters is quite happy to murder people during the course of enriching himself. The book has some elements that are often associated with grimdark - there's a lot of muck and dirt, a lot of crudity, swearing (examples: the phrases "bending cocks" and "stretching cunts" crop up quite a bit) and harsh lives lived in fairly hopeless squalor on show. And when my wife saw me reading it she was reminded that she'd liked it a lot, and asked me to buy the next two volumes. I know some readers that have been very enthusiastic about my work are big fans of this one. This book treads the line between something I'd really like and something I'm a bit meh on, and it keeps putting a foot to either side. I'm used to seeing people hate books I loved, and to me bouncing off books that some folk adore with religious zeal. 6/26/2023 0 Comments The eragon series in orderSince there isn’t much of a secret to be solved about how the Eragon books should be read in order, we’ll just list them all below. Until then we have to do with the birth of Sapphira from a polished blue stone in the movie from 2006. Only time will tell if a follow-up to Eragon or a complete remake of the story is in the works. Then, in August of that year, author Christopher Paolini revealed that Disney had canceled plans to recreate the series. After Disney bought 20th Century Fox, rumors spread that the company was planning to start the series over again. The movie version of Eragon, which came out in 2006 from 20th Century Fox, got a lot of bad reviews. Knopf in 2003, and the rest of the Inheritance Cycle was published by the same publisher later. One woman describes a complicated rage at one's own body-for being ill with no explanation-while another writes of the rage she inherits from her father. In Burn It Down, a diverse group of women authors explore what rage means to them-from the personal to the systemic, the unackowledged to the public, and more. But this issue isn't just timely-there's depth to the idea of women's rage: who gets to be angry (white women, black women, young women)? How do women express their anger? And what will they do with it as a collective? Burn It Down: Women Writing About Anger Edited by Lilly Dancyger. The rage of women is at a high: sparked by the Women's March of early 2017, stoked by countless policies of the Trump administration, and finally reaching incineration levels over the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh in October 2018. 6/25/2023 0 Comments The kitten fairyIn the New World, evidence of wildcat cults is found across Central and South America, where the jaguar was the familiar of shamans and a powerful totemic animal. In China the lion, Shih, is one of the four principal animal protectors - associated with rain, guardian of the dead and their living descendants. Such imagery has been found in ancient sites across Europe, Africa, India and the Middle East. In the earliest feline images found on cave walls and carved out of stone, wildcats are companions and guardians to the Great Goddess - often flanking a mother goddess figure in the act of giving birth. Which is why, the legend concludes, all cats are proud, to this very day. As their reward, when the boat reached dry land the cats walked at the head of the great procession of Noah's animals. They set to work, and quickly dispatched all the rats - but for the original two. Noah prayed for a miracle, and a pair of cats sprang to life from the mouths of the lion and lioness. When God covered the world with water, and Noah set his ark afloat, the ark became infested with rats eating up the stores of food. According to one old legend, cats were the only creatures on earth who were not made by God at the time of Creation. It explores the alleys and garrets of Grub Street, rummages the shelves of bookshops and libraries, peers through printsellers' shop windows and into artists' studios, and slips behind the scenes at Drury Lane and Covent Garden. Its purpose is to show how literature, painting, music and the theatre were communicated to a public increasingly avid for them. John Brewer's enthralling book explains how this happened and recreates the world in which the great works of English eighteenth-century art were made. By the dawn of the nineteenth century they were all aprt of the cultural life of the nation. In 1660, there were few professional authors, musicians and painters, no public concert series, galleries, newspaper critics or reviews. It charts the growth of a literary and artistic world fostered by publishers, theatrical and musical impresarios, picture dealers and auctioneers, and presented to th public in coffee-houses, concert halls, libraries, theatres and pleasure gardens. The Pleasures of the Imagination examines the birth and development of English "high culture" in the eighteenth century. 6/25/2023 0 Comments Once Upon a Curse by E.D. Subtitled "An Affectionate Portrait of Britain," the resulting book is a love letter to a nation from an adopted son. In so doing, Bryson discovers that he's become nearly as British as he is American and ends up wondering if he's going home or leaving it. After he and his English wife would move back to the United States, Bryson who also wrote the best-selling "The Mother Tongue" and "Made in America" decided to take a final tour around his adopted land before leaving. That seems the theme for Bryson's "Notes From a Small Island," if such a crazy quilt of a book can be said to have a theme. The only problem seems to be that after living nearly half his life in Britain, the U.S.-born Bryson is no longer quite sure just where home is.
